Cape Town pinpoints Civic Centre parking lot for affordable housing, mixed‑use development
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee has greenlit plans for an inner-city affordable housing and mixed-use development on a municipal parking lot at the Civic Centre in the CBD.
According to Councillor Carl Pophaim, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, the site is just one of several inner-city land release initiatives. Others include the Fruit & Veg site on Roeland Street, Harrington Square, several more sites in Woodstock and Salt River, and provincial-led projects at Buitengracht Street and Artscape.
The estimated sale income of R230 million alongside R50 million annual rates and services revenue is expected to contribute a R1.5 billion private sector investment for the CBD.
The plans will go to Council to approve public participation on releasing the site for redevelopment.
