R600m shopping centre opens on former working mushroom farm in Kyalami
The R600 million Mushroom Farm Shopping Centre in the Kyalami-Waterfall node has opened its doors – with a second phase planned for 2026.
Owned and developed by Century Property Development, the centre’s name pays homage to its history as a working mushroom farm neighbouring the original Waterval Farm – now Waterfall Estates.
The 27 000m2 centre’s design, conceived with input from locals, is a social and lifestyle hub anchored by a central community plaza, which sits prominently on the highest point in its neighbourhood with medical and office suites on the first floor and retail and restaurant terraces on the ground floor.
Anchored by a 9 000m2 Checkers Hyper and a 1 300m2 Dis-Chem, other retailers include WW Edit, Pick n Pay Clothing, Miladys, Contempo, and Kingsmead Shoes with @Home, Dial-a-Bed, Mr Price Home and PEP Home. With multiple dining choices, the centre also features three drive-throughs – Mugg & Bean, Steers and KFC.
The development also incorporates 1 150 parking bays, dedicated Uber and Checkers Sixty60 pickup zones, 60 motorbike bays, and an integrated transport hub with 96 taxi bays.
Mushroom Farm Shopping Centre was designed by BAR Architects and built by Archstone Construction. Its architectural language beds natural textures and farm-style materials, creating warmth and modernity, with airy, high volumes wrapped in glass brickwork to diffuse daylight. Its interiors feature exposed brick, Japanese cedar panelling reminiscent of a mushroom cap, and generous natural light.
Construction began in September 2024 and finished on schedule in October 2025,
