Cape Town’s ‘Fruit & Veg’ site released for social housing

Cape Town has released city-owned land known as the ‘Fruit & Veg’ site for the development of 237 social housing units.

The 3 300m2 property is situated between Kent and Bloemhof Streets, on the edge of District Six and the CBD, and it is within walking distance of the city centre, MyCiTi bus stations, schools and universities.

The municipality says the social housing unit yield has increased from the originally proposed 180 units to 237 units as part of the proposal by developer, YG Group. The mixed-use development will now include 375 residential units in total with 435m2 of retail space.

The development is aimed at households earning between R1 850 and R32 000 per month.
