Framework approved to transform Greater Zandspruit Area into a ‘vibrant’ precinct

The City of Johannesburg has approved the Zandspruit Urban Development Framework (UDF) 2024 to provide a blueprint for the transformation of the Greater Zandspruit area into a ‘vibrant and resource efficient’ precinct.

The framework, which updates and refines the 2008 UDF, integrates critical planning considerations such as infrastructure development, economic growth, housing provision, and environmental sustainability, says the municipality.

Several key nodes including the Northgate Regional Node, Laser Park Industrial Node, and Kya Sands Industrial Node, have been identified as catalysts for economic and spatial transformation with the framework ensuring that the area’s development aligns with the City’s Spatial Development Framework and current infrastructure plans.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) was appointed as the implementing agent and played a pivotal role in overseeing the formulation of the framework, says JDA CEO Themba Mathibe: “Through our collaboration with urban planners, engineers, environmentalists, and community participation consultants, we have developed a framework that balances economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity. This approval paves the way for infrastructure investments, improved public amenities, and enhanced economic prospects for the residents of Zandspruit.”

With Council approval, the City, through the JDA, says it is now positioned to drive the next phase of implementation of its development vision for Zandspruit.
